Fort Worth Film Cutlure is on the Rise, With Killer Film Festivals and a Growing Crop of Local Talent.

A tumbleweed clumsily somersaults its way through a barren, dust-choked landscape, occasionally brushing up against signs of life and hope. Graceless and acrobatic, it bump-bump-bumps along until it reaches the crest of a hill, where it leaps into the air and wafts slowly downward, finally bouncing into a cityscape at a new dawn.

As a metaphor for Fort Worth’s emerging film culture, it’s an image we swiped from the Coen Brothers’ bowling noir masterpiece, The Big Lebowski. But it’s a fitting theft, because the CoBros have a connection to the changing face of Cowtown film culture: their new film, A Serious Man, is one of the highlights of a weekend film festival that’s helped kick-start a once-dormant cinemascape.

While putting together this post, I had a hard time with the title. I was going to include the words retro or vintage but then I thought – Are most of these retro or are some of these modern? Here was my conclusion: While some of these illustrations have that retro-feel, most are a modern take on a movie classic.

What these artists have done so well is take a particular scene or character and create a visual representation of the movie. Most of the time, rather than bombard us with visuals, they ask us to draw on our experiences. From Olly Moss’s incredibly simplistic black and red movie posters to Tom Whalen and Brandon Schaefer’s more colorful, retro-inspired art, I hope you enjoy this collection of some of the most cleverest and coolest retro-modern movie illustrations around!

Microblogging site popular for those taking on the characters’ personae

With a new spread in Vanity Fair, a glowing endorsement by Oprah and another major win at the recent Emmy awards, the popular ’60s-era AMC television series “Mad Men” has become firmly rooted in the mainstream. But the show’s quirky characters have been showing up in another “stream” over the course of the last year, as well, thanks to a fast-growing “fan fiction” phenomenon on the microblogging site Twitter.

As with all things “Mad Men,” the in-character tweeting craze began with the show’s protagonist, ad man Don Draper, or in this case @Don_Draper, a Twitter account launched by Paul Isakson, from Minneapolis, who truly is in advertising and marketing

Just when you thought the zombie apocalypse genre had run out of steam in Hollywood, a movie such as “Zombieland” springs out of nowhere and attacks you senseless like a shotgun blast to the funnybone.

Like other zombie adventures before it, including “Dawn of the Dead” and “28 Days Later,” “Zombieland” is about surviving in an increasingly dangerous land where humans are few and the flesh-eating undead rule.

In the beginning, there is just Columbus (“Adventureland’s” Jesse Eisenberg), a nerdish social outcast sonicknamed by other survivors because that’s where he’s headed to see his family.

Megan Fox will host the 35th season premiere of ‘Saturday Night Live,’ airing Sept. 26 on NBC.

TV ratings: NBC wins Wednesday, ‘Octomom’ special flops

FOX’s two-hour “Octomom” special didn’t do much in the ratings Wednesday, as viewers mostly ingored Nadya Suleman the network finished fourth behind a hodgepodge of reality shows and reruns on the other big networks.

NBC led the night with about 7.5 million viewers and a 4.8 rating/8 share in households. ABC (5.67 million, 3.7/6) narrowly beat CBS (5.66 million, 3.8/7) for second place. FOX came in fourth with 4.2 million viewers and a 2.7/5. The CW trailed with just over 1 million viewers and a 0.8/1.

Rodger Ebert Reviews ‘District 9′

I suppose there’s no reason the first alien race to reach the Earth shouldn’t look like what the cat threw up. After all, they love to eat cat food. The alien beings in “District 9,” nicknamed “prawns” because they look like a cross between lobsters and grasshoppers, arrive in a space ship that hovers over Johannesburg. Found inside, huddled together and starving to death, are the aliens, who benefit from a humanitarian impulse to relocate them to a location on the ground.

Here they become not welcomed but feared, and their camp turns into a prison. Fearing alien attacks, humans demand they be resettled far from town, and a clueless bureaucrat named Wikus van der Merwe (Sharlto Copley) is placed in charge of this task. The creatures are not eager to move. A private security force, headed by van der Merwe, moves in with armored vehicles and flame-throwers to encourage them, and van der Merwe cheerfully destroys houses full of their young.
